For the first fifteen years of my HR career, I occupied a diverse range of Employee Relations/Human Resources roles with leading organisations, including Trans Australia Airlines, Ford Motor Company, International Harvester, Burswood Island Resort and Casino, and Coles-Myer. Some of my major achievements included: -
- Maintaining a strike-free record at International Harvester during an enforced scheme of arrangement with a deeply resentful/antagonistic union movement
- Arriving in Perth to assume HR start-up responsibility for the first-ever casino/entertainment complex in Western Australia, with nothing in existence upon arrival, and leaving three years later with a fully operational workforce exceeding 2,000 staff members
- Successfully negotiating and executing the first-ever employer-based EBA in the Australian retail industry, creating a major precedent, while saving Coles-Myer in excess of $10m per annum.
In late 1995, I formed my own HR consulting practice, where I have spent the past thirty years (except for a two-year stint in the HR software development industry) designing & delivering employee relations, people analytics, workforce planning and HR infrastructure programs and solutions to a diverse client base located throughout Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Asia, South Africa, the UK and the USA. (10 countries in all).
Over the course of this journey, I have increasingly focused my attention within the Holistic Workforce Planning space, as I am convinced that the benefits organisations/key stakeholders can achieve in this discipline exceed any other people initiative that could be selected. Some of my achievements include: -
- Presenting public and in-house Workforce Planning & People Analytics workshops and conferences in 11 countries.
- Designing and executing comprehensive Workforce Planning programs that generated multi-million dollar savings in a major state government corporation and a private hospital group
- Acting as chairperson/keynote speaker at HR conferences and events in Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia
- Developing tertiary-level blended learning subjects in Workforce Planning & People Analytics in association with AHRI and Deakin University.
- Designing and facilitating MBA-level courses for Deakin University
- Managing my own USA HR Best-Practice Study Tour for more than a decade, benchmarking with pre-eminent organisations including Harley-Davidson, FedEx, NASA, Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard & Marriott Hotels.
